SAS Viya for Learners is our free software offering for teaching and learning. Whether you're familiar with all that it offers – or brand new to the software – there's lots to get excited about, especially with our newest version.

Consider this library article a brief overview – and know that we’ll follow up with a BUNCH of other enablement articles in SAS Communities.

In no particular order, let’s go through the existing features and enhancements by the SAS Viya products known and loved by our academic friends:

SAS Visual Analytics

  • You’ll find an upgraded interface with an intuitive design, which speeds up learning time.
  • Discover more flexible dashboards, which make analysis and storytelling easier.
  • It still includes all your favorite advanced analytics tools, which is a great place to start for students new to predictive modeling and machine learning.

SAS Studio

  • You can now submit Python code directly in SAS Studio using PROC PYTHON.  Yay!
  • Custom Steps allow you to implement advanced algorithms or methods not available by default… or help you automated more classical tasks that you perform frequently.
  • SAS Studio Flows offer a drag-and-drop interface to build workflows. Enterprise Guide and Enterprise Miner users will love this feature!

SAS Model Studio

  • It’s still THE tool for predictive modeling and machine learning experts in SAS Viya, particularly those looking to integrate Python + R models.
  • Explore the new Fairness and Bias Detection Tools. Just because you can run a model, doesn’t mean you should!
  • It’s now MUCH easier to import and export SAS Model Studio projects, making it easier to collaborate and evaluate student performance.

Jupyter Notebooks

  • Use GitHub to easily share files with students and collaborators.
  • Leverage updated Python + R packages, including the rdataset package in Python – which provides over 2000+ datasets for teaching and learning!

That’s a whole lot of reasons to get excited about VFL4!

Other important fine print:

  • SAS VFL is for students and educators. Registration requires a SAS Profile that uses an academic email address.
  • SAS Viya for Learners 3.5 and SAS Viya for Learners 4 are separate environments. Your files and saved work do not transfer between versions.
  • Students and educators can access SAS Viya for Learners 3.5 until August 28, 2024.
