As of the 2025.09 release of SAS Model Manager on SAS Viya, users can view markdown format. Markdown files (ending in .md), stored in the File’s pane of a model, can be toggled between editing and viewing through the quick click of a button.

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that uses simple characters to format text. Markdown files are typically used to create README files but have recently gained traction as a way to create model cards. For example, the model card for llama is stored as a markdown file.

While these files won’t replace the model cards we use within SAS Model Manager, they often contain important modeling information we want to preserve with the model.

To take advantage of the markdown format support, simply add your markdown files ending in .md into the model files. You’ll be able to toggle between the source code and the format preview with just a click.

Here’s an example of the various types of markdown formatting supported:

Markdown support was a feature requested by one of our SAS Model Manager users. You can suggest a new feature at any time using the SAS Product Suggestions page.
