A recent survey of our local SAS user community in Norway found 59% of SAS data and AI users use Git at least weekly.

The results tell us two things:

  1. Most SAS data and AI users actively use Git, but
  2. The SAS community’s use is behind that of the wider software development community, where over 93% of developers use Git

Key Benefits

Among those who use Git actively, the survey also asked what they use Git for, which gives us an indication of its value.

The top three use cases all focus on collaboration, one of the five pillars of DataOps:

  1. Most SAS users use Git to support collaboration – which aligns with Git's intended purpose. As a distributed version control system, Git has great mechanisms for making repositories available across a team and integrating the work of all team members
  2. The Git platform allows users to share their work with others, and
  3. Allows users to benefit from work shared by others

The popular practice of automating Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipelines – known as CI/CD – is also gaining traction among this user group.

Conclusion

There is tremendous value in all this usage of Git. Thus, I want to inspire the data and AI community to investigate the wonders of Git and give it a try. Modern user interfaces for Git, such as those available in SAS Studio, significantly lower the threshold for using it.

I have a webinar coming up shortly – please sign up if you want to learn more about Git and how to use it effectively in SAS Studio for your data and AI work.
