Rick, would a box and whisker plot do the trick?  X axis would be the Mother weight groups and y axis the child weights.  Would clearly show the child weight distribution (a statistician would like that!), sample size could be reflected by box width and/or block variable annotation (my preference).

It's an interesting suggestion, but I don't think it satisfies the customer's requirements for wanting to visualize the mean value in each bin.  She also wanted to visualize the deciles for the Y variable. 

Anyway, I think we are getting off topic. I hope we have answered the OP's questions.
