Did you miss the Ask the Expert session on Virtualizing Enterprise Data? Not to worry, you can catch it on-demand at any time.
I have also attached the slide and demonstration steps used during the presentation that showed the following:
Here is a transcript of the Q&A segment held at the end of the session for ease of reference:
Can data from a relational database and delimited system files be federated?
Yes, in the SAS Federation Server, if you have a driver capable of reading your data source, then we can leverage it as a source in a federated view.
Does virtualizing data requiring the copy federated data to another location requiring more disk space?
No, the virtualized view is stored in memory, as long as the result set from the SQL query will fit. If it is too large, then the extra will be written to disk.
Can I cache a federated view and why would I?
Yes, you can cache a federated view in any configured data source in the SAS Federation Server, including the memory data store. The advantage of caching is availability of the data to users when the underlying data sources are off-line.
Can data virtualization be used in a big data management strategy?
Absolutely. In fact, it is one of the top five best practices, as the data is not replicated anywhere in the virtualized, unless you decide to cache the data for availability and near real-time data access.
Can I leverage the security framework of SAS Metadata in the SAS Federation Server?
Yes, the SAS Federation Server is completely integrated into the SAS Metadata framework for role, groups, users, and authentication domains.
Can I read and write data to and from Hadoop?
Yes, the SAS Federation Server supports a variety of data services, including native drivers, ODBC drivers, and SAS TK Hive driver.
How does the SAS Federation Server support high availability?
Data sources from several SAS Federation Servers can be shared among each other. If one server goes down for maintenance, then another Federation Server could cache the data, or enable the data services from that server. Several SAS Federation Servers can also be configured in a load-balancing application.
