I did all you said:

1. I started a Cloudera VM from fresh.

2. The CDH is now given 16GB or RAM with 2 processors.

3. I stopped all the services you asked to.

But I did notice the "Hosts" warning in Cloudera Manager is:

quickstart.cloudera: Memory Overcommit Validation Threshold
Memory on host quickstart.cloudera is overcommitted. The total memory allocation is 75.0 GiB bytes but there are only 15.6 GiB bytes of RAM (3.1 GiB bytes of which are reserved for the system). Visit the Resources tab on the Host page for allocation details. Reconfigure the roles on the host to lower the overall memory allocation. Note: Java maximum heap sizes are multiplied by 1.3 to approximate JVM overhead.

And the errors in SAS Data Loader looks somewhat similar to what I started with:

Hi Chen,

I'm able to duplicate your error on my test machine.  There seems to be an issue when using user=root and pass=cloudera.  The user/pass is valid, however the installation fails with the same error:

ERROR: sas-hadoop-tool init --clienthost="192.168.213.128" --clientuser="root" --clientpass="cloudera" --svckey=hivejdbc --svckey=hadoop --svckey=mapreduce --svckey=hcatapi --nojartrace failed

I was able to get past this by using user=cloudera pass=cloudera on the vApp login screen.  Please try that once CDH VM is running with all green status for services we listed.

Hi, Clark:

Unfortunately, it did not make a difference on my system.

Hi Chen,

How much memory committed for DL4H VM and how much for CDH?  I am using 4GB for DL4H (1CPU) and 8GB for CDH (2 CPU).

Also, what does your "Performance" look like under "Task Manager".  It's possible, we've hit the ceiling on your desktop and may need to have you shut some things down.  Here is what mine looks like running the two VMs, Outlook and Mozilla Firefox:

Hi Chen,

Clark and I have been trying to break this all afternoon. Everything I try works. Like Clark, I just got it to work with DL (4GB) and CDH (8GB). I am running on a huge PC (32GB RAM). I am not sure what Clark is running on. Probably a laptop with 16GB of RAM. How much RAM does your machine have?

Best wishes,

Jeff

Hi,

I discussed this with one of the developers. Here are 4 things that typically cause issues:

1) not enough RAM/CPU for the CDH Quickstart (we've already discussed this - it may be the actual problem here)

2) Hive crashed while the Quickstart was coming up (Clark had you explore this one - it could be related to 1)

3) Diskspace on the Quickstart is full (Since it is a new environment I doubt this one is it)

4) SASWorkspace shared directory is not setup/configured properly (I would double-check this)

The developer pointed me to a description of how to collect logs from the Quickstart configuration. Here are the instructions.

You can collect logging information from the CDH Quickstart (it will work with Hortonworks, too). Here's how:

  • Go to your SASvAppLedger: <ipaddress>/SASvAppLedger
  • Click on "Jobs"
  • Click on "Collect vApp Logs" button
  • Go to <ipaddress>/SASvAppLedger/resources
  • Find "logarchive"
  • There should be a "...tar.gz" filename and it is a link.
  • Click this filename
  • on the page that comes up, click "link"
  • This brings up a dialog box which allows you to save the log zip file

Take a look at the resulting files. You may be able to see what the problem is. If you find the problem please post the resolution here. Not knowing what the problem is has Clark and me flustered;)
