What about SGPLOT? Use a scatter statement with Markerattrs to specify the symbol.
proc sgplot data=sashelp.class;
scatter x=weight y=height/markerattrs=(symbol=asterisk);
run; quit;
Correct your spelling - it's tilde not tilda.
