Update 2/21/23: It appears to be a SAS Private JRE versioning issue, as we can connect and read the HDI data directly from the AIX server (NOT via SAS) using standard Java SE 8. We're working with SAS to update our JRE version to a newer one that more closely matches the OS Java version. I'll post another update once that's complete and tested (it may be a while; this is a slow-moving process).

Jeff, thank you for your response. Yes, I guess it's been a while for you, as we do have a working SAS on AIX connection to an on-prem Hadoop cluster, which we established in 2018. We are looking to change from on-prem Hadoop to Azure HDI and need to make the connection between our on-prem SAS 9.4 environment and the Azure HDI cloud environment. We may have made some progress on this on Friday. I'll know more next week after some more testing and will update this thread with the resolution, if so. Thanks again for your response. I appreciate your time.

Has anyone here successfully connected SAS 9.4 on UNIX AIX to an Azure HDInsight cluster? On UNIX, the default HTTPS port is 8343. The Azure HDI default port is 443. Port 443 is not typically used by SAS 9.4 on UNIX machines, as the lower ports on UNIX are restricted for use by ROOT only. We are wondering if anyone has successfully made a connection with this same type of configuration and can provide some guidance on how you made it work. We have an open ticket with SAS Tech Support, but that back-and-forth usually takes a while and UNIX support is not a SAS strength (not a complaint about tech support, just an observation after years of working with SAS - SAS TS is much more knowledgeable about LINUX and Windows configurations). If a SAS admin has successfully made this connection and can provide the steps taken to make it happen, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

Well that seems delightfully easy. We'll give that a shot and see if it resolves our issues. Thank you!

Greetings @alepage. Did you ever resolve this issue? We are just transitioning our users to EG 8.3 and so far one person has indicated that he finds his connection dropping more frequently that when he used EG 7.15 and another person today received an unusual 'unable to connect to the server' message in EG 8.3 but was able to connect to the same server and run his program in EG 7.15. If you resolved your issue, I'd love to know what the resolution was. Otherwise, I'll submit a ticket to SAS tech support and we'll work through the back-and-forth emails to try to find a resolution. Thanks in advance.

This was a fantastically useful thread! My thanks to both of you @FK1 and @gwootton for already asking and answering a question I had and others I didn't even know I had until I saw them here. 😁🏆

It appears that @briankinnebrew was able to come through for us AIX folks! My company is getting ready to perform a UIP from M5 to M7 on AIX and expected not to be able to use the Content Assessment tool, as it was not available for AIX when I last checked in early March. However, I was reading @ScottMcCauley's 12-16-20 article regarding the tool, which contains a link to the Content Assessment download page. Something told me to click on the link and there I discovered that just this month (April 2021) they released a new version of the applications and they've included a 64-bit enabled AIX platform version. Perfect timing for my company! My thanks to Brian for submitting the request to the SAS devs and to the devs for finally including us AIX folks in the mix.
The ReadMe file for the AIX version indicates that, "The AIX version of SAS® 9 Content Assessment supports only the SAS® 9 System Evaluation, SAS® 9 Inventory, SAS® 9 Profile, SAS® 9 Publish Assessed Content, and SAS® 9 Code Check applications. The AIX version of SAS® 9 Content Assessment does not support the SAS® 9 Gather SAS Code, SAS® 9 Import Enterprise Guide Projects, or SAS® 9 Import Packages applications."

We have decided to discontinue use of this product, as it no longer meets our needs. We did not resolve the error indicated here, so anyone encountering a similar issue in the future should speak with SAS Technical Support to discuss the details of their particular implementation. Thanks.

Hello SAS Admin Friends,
Do any of you have experience with configuring the SAS/ACCESS Interface to SAP R/3 to work with SNC (specifically: running SAS on UNIX, but ANY experience at all with this would be helpful)?
Our interface was working fine when we did NOT have SNC enabled in the SAP environment, but now we have moved to SNC and are struggling to get it working for SAS. We've been dealing with this since February and really need to get it working, as a) this has taken way too long and b) SNC just went live in our SAP production environment so now our SAS access to the SAP data is hosed.
Here's where we're at with it:
All other non-SAP environments have been successfully updated to work with SAP SNC, so we know the SAP configuration is correct.
With assistance from SAS Tech Support and a SAS dev, we have recently managed to successfully execute a libname statement and data step against our SNC-enabled SAP/BW QA server, but... only when directly logged onto the server and running the statements from the SAS program editor.
When we try to connect with a libname statement via the SAS desktop apps (EG, MC, DIS), we get errors.
The first error was basically that SAS couldn't locate the sapnwrfc.ini file, which at the suggestion of SAS Tech Support was resolved by placing a copy of the ini file in the startup path used by the desktop applications (which for some unknown annoying reason is not the same as that used by SAS on the server itself). The need for this duplication does not seem to be documented anywhere.
The current error is that now that SAS can locate the copy of the ini file, it still cannot acquire initiating credentials from the cred_v2 file (which we know is a valid and working file, because it works for SAS on the server).
The error is still on the SAS side of the interface, as our SAP environment shows no attempts at connection as it should (and as it does when we run the libname statement directly on the SAS server).
This is the current credentials error (server details snipped):
ERROR: RFC_COMMUNICATION_FAILURE
LOCATION CPIC (TCP/IP) on local host with Unicode
ERROR GSS-API(maj): No credentials were supplied
Could't acquire INITIATING credentials for
name="<snip>"

If you have worked through this same issue, we'd love to hear from you as to how you resolved it. Thanks in advance!

Yes, that's how we configured the odbc.ini file and how I've written the libname statements, but I'm still getting the errors, so there must be a setting in the odbc.ini file that is causing this to fail, since yours works.
[IP]
Driver=/sas94/sashome/AccessClients/9.4/SQLServer/lib/S0sqls27.so
Database=
HostName=swpdb
And these are my libname statements.
LIBNAME IP SQLSVR dsn=IP qualifier=IP schema=dbo USER=IPME PASSWORD=XXXX;
LIBNAME OCM SQLSVR dsn=IP qualifier=OCM schema=dbo USER=OCMME PASSWORD=XXXX;
We know the credentials are good and that the connection worked before we tried to accommodate multiple databases on it, so there must be something in our configuration that isn't quite right for this multi-db approach. Thank you for your help and confirming that it is possible. For now we're just going to make separate entries for each database so the user can get his work done and I'll reach out to SAS tech support for their insights. I'll post back here when I have more info from them.
As much as I'm sure SAS users connect to SQL databases via SAS, you'd think they'd make it a little more clear and user friendly.
