Hello, and thanks for your question.

There are many types of data item you can create in VA, so I'm not sure which type of derived column you are asking about.

If you mean a calculated item, the Edit Calculated Item window has a Format field at the bottom where you can set the width.

If you mean a custom category, the width should automatically match the longest label value in your custom category.

Most other types of derived columns take numeric formats.

Does that help?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi,

Can you please explain what you mean by derived column and also how you are loading the data into SAS Visual Analytics? If you are loading the data into SAS Visual Analytics via the data builder you can change the length of a character column by specifying its length. You can see examples of this in blog post on SAS Visual Analytics: loading data into memory As per the screenshot you can see there are columns defined as a length of 10, 3 & 5 characters in the output table.

Once a table is loaded into memory, the length of the field cannot be changed. You can change the format width though as Sam points out and for new calculated items you create.

Let us know if we have helped with your question and if not, please provide further details so we have a better understanding on what you are after.

Kind Regards,

Michelle
