Data set 2: Org     OrgID a1          a001 a2          a002 a3          a003 a4          a004 a5          a005 b1          b001 b3          b003 What it means is, data set 1 consists of the names of the organizations, and data set 2 consists of the codes of them. The question is: how can I assign these codes from data set 2 to data set 1? I can do a few data steps on this but that sounds a bit ineffective. My data has IDs as a group of variables, let's say 3. It means each variable may not be unique individually, but together every 3 variables specifies a unique observation. It looks like this: Var1     Var2     Var3 John     PHIL    PA Mike     PHIL    PA John     CHIC    IL John     PHIL     PA You will see that observations 1 and 4 are duplicates and there comes the question: How can I identify duplicates from this data? If it's some single ID variable I can do: data dups nodups; set have; by ID; if first.ID and last.ID then output nodups; else output dups; run; But I'm not sure how to do in this situation. I need to merge two data sets using two ID variables whose characteristics look like this: * Data set 1: IDVar1: Type=Char; Length=42; Format=Blank (i.e., nothing's seen on the description cell of PROC contents output) IDVar2: Type=Char; Length=21; Format=Blank *Data set 2: IDVar1: Type=Char; Length=19; Format=Blank; Informat = $19. I tried several ways to create identical formats among these variables in order to merge these data sets yet none has worked; that is, a lot of observations in two data sets supposed to merge with each other based on the substantive values of ID variables turned out to be separate in merged data. Maybe the title is too vague, but here's the actual circumstance. Before merging, I have file number 1 with the size of N1 and file number 2 N2. For the most part, N2 is a subset of N1. Some observations in N2 may not be in N1 as seen later. After merging, the size becomes N, N > N1.
