Thanks Quentin for your time and effort. However, vardif and vardif2 don't reset for each unit. Whatever is used for the counter should cause the firstvar and average to reset for each unit change.

Hope this clarifies it. The vardif and vardif2 are derived from the 'unit' that is changed each iteration.

Hi Quentin, The usage of &num is within 'more stuff'. I would like to have a mechanism to revisit the logic to get a new firstvar and varavg for each new 'num'. You're right to ask because 'var' is modified each '&num'. Regards,

I have the following script which has a logic for _n_ within a macro. I wish to reset _n_ each time the macro is called. Can you show me how _n_ is reset according to the new value of num? I'm trying to take the difference of a variable and it's first value. for a given variable: var = 1 3 2 4 0 6 we get: vardif = 0 2 1 3 -1 5 A related problem is to take the average of a few of the first values and subtract it from the variable: var = 1 3 2 4 0 6 varavg = (1+3+2)/3=2 vardif2 = -1 1 0 2 -1 4 I tried the approach: data have; set have; vardif = var1-FIRST..var1; run; without success. Thanks Tom, I was able to get the 2nd option to work more or less as below. In creating 'have' i used 'where' in the context of create table to set up the column 'Unit'. The array 'veh_no' is then assigned the values of Unit. Table 'have' is updated on a daily basis. If you can think of any land mines I may have placed in the logic I'd appreciate ideas. I occasionally get the following error: unable to open file ... as a valid project file. The error message is below. I'm using sas EG, The project file is ~ 50 megs. The sas technical support suggested the following, however, I'm not sure that it helps: Below Project got saved in C:/ Temporary Location, where files get deleted in regular intervals. Please save your file in D:/ only. Any help to resolve this would be appreciated. The error message follows. Unable to open file \\Client\C$\SAS\CN FTON\fname.egp as a valid project file

Sorry for the confusion. I don't know how to create a variable array that is updated from a table. I also don't know how to insert the variable table into the loop as a condition.
