Hello- Looking for some assistance in putting together a new string variable. Due to bad data entry from various sources, I need to somehow make the data element consistent. Currently I have data sample #1- under column heading 'p_ds' there are dashes and spaces within the character string. I would like to create a new variable that would 1) eliminate the dash '-' in obs 1, 2 and 4. and 2) eliminate the space in position 3 and position 9 in obs 5. obs p_ds count 1 01-100017-6002000 5 2 01-611436090211 25 3 4159512368424 8 4 0461549-6003362 3 5 05 61564 6003420 8 I would like my final dataset to look like sample #2. How can I best approach this? 1 11000176002000 5 2 1611436090211 25 3 4159512368424 8 4 04615496003362 3 5 5615646003420 8

Hello - I am looking for some assistance. I have a character field variable that contains data with both text and numbers. I am looking to change the data that is text into number zero and keep the text that looks like numbers and convert to number for further calculation/analysis. Is there a way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Hai- I re-tried the last.student function and matched it back to the original dataset to create the new data variable. I will definitely try the proc sql to test it out. Many thanks everyone!

Mr. Tabachneck- The highest grade is always equal to or greater than the last grade. I am not familiar with hash and interested in learning once I become more comfortable with proc sql. Will your code do the work it needs to? proc sql; create table want as select *, max(grade) as highest_grade from have group by fn, ln ; quit;

I have a longitudinal dataset containing various grades for students. I want to select the very last grade per student, create a new variable and assign that grade to that variable. Is there an easy way to accomplish this. I tried to write a last statement but did not produce the results I was anticipating. Thank you Mr. Tabachneck! I created a table and that resolved the pop up box. Arghhh still trying to learn PROC SQL to join. Been using 'merge' statement and trying to learn joins. Thank you again!

It fails to continue to execute. A pop-up window tells me " Output WINDOW FULL" and just stops.

I am trying to perform a full join (include all matches and non-matches based on two conditions keeping variables from both tables) I am attempting to join by two conditions becuase "LCODE" in dataset A can be found as 'DCODE1" or "SCODE1" in two different variables in dataset B. I tried to increase buffersize as I read that could possibly resolve- it didnt. I am getting this error from SAS when trying to perform this join. Can anyone help me? Thank you. I have a data variable that appears to have been merged with two different variables. I now need to separate the variable into two new variables. Is there a way to pull apart a variable to create two different new variables. The position location is never the same so I dont believe I can use the substring function. Here is sample: Data element is District and it appears to have been combined with the district name and a number. I need to separate the name and number- Is it possible? 'Alliance College-Ready Academy - 0165866' 'Excel Prep Charter - 018842' 'Fortuna Elementary - 038521'

Yes- the field can also contain "N" or blank.

I have a dataset containing various different 'modes' They are labelled ELA_MOD1, ELAL_MOD2.. etc up through 9. I am hoping to run a code that will go through each of the 9 'modes' to determine if "Y" was entered. Is there a quick way to run this through SAS other than writing a separate if-then statement for each 'mode'? Can anyone offer me some assistance?
