SAS expert, trainer, and author Troy Martin Hughes illustrates the benefits of learning how to build your own functions with PROC FCMP.
PROC FCMP (aka, the SAS® function compiler) empowers SAS practitioners to build our own user-defined functions and subroutines—callable software modules that containerize discrete functionality, and which effectively extend the Base SAS programming language. This webinar, presented by the author of the upcoming SAS Press PROC FCMP book, explores five high-level problem sets that user-defined functions can solve. Learn how to hide a hash object (and its complexity) inside a function, how to design a format (or informat) that calls a function, and even how to run a DATA step (or procedure) inside a DATA step using RUN_MACRO! Interwoven throughout the discussion are the specific software quality characteristics—modularity, flexibility, configurability, reusability, and maintainability—that can be improved through the design and implementation of PROC FCMP user-defined functions!
Some of us (like me) don't grasp the meaning of "Swipe Right"
Hi @PaigeMiller . For SAS programmers a generation younger than me, "swipe right" means "say yes to", "approve", etc. It comes from the cell phone dating app world... a world many of us have never known. : )
Troy's talk will be celebrating all that you can do with FCMP, to attempt to convince you that FCMP is a good match for your programming needs. Or at least that it's worth trying it out for a date or two.
Join us!
This sound very topical for me as I have been learning/using fcmp for a few use-cases recently. I'm wondering if this will be available for viewing after the event.
02:00 am is a bit too early/late for my time zone (Australia). Thanks, rob
Well @robAs I have to say if you're not wiling to wake up at 0155 for SAS, I question your commitment. : ) I've seen your countrymate @MichelleHomes not only joining the SAS Bowls at a similar hour, but often decked out in SAS swag.
That said, yes, if you're unable to join live, we post BASUG webinar recordings to our website (https://www.basug.org/videos) and a PDF of Troy's slides will be posted to our archives https://www.basug.org/archives. We try to get them posted within a week after the meeting.
G'Day @robAs - lovely to hear from you!!!
"since years ago"... that's a nice way of saying multiple decades 😉
I'll have you know, I go for a run each day at 4:30am. Maybe you are confusing me with Paul 🤣
Catching up with the SAS community is always fun and the online global events are a great way to connect and learn. Great to hear you are using PROC FCMP - would love to hear what you're doing these days. I'll send you a message.
Cheers,
Michelle
