Agree with suggestion.  Would also be great if these error/warning/note/info messages could be listed in a dictionary table.  Lots of folks writing log scanners take different approaches to finding the messages they want, and of course the wording of messages often changes between versions.

given some explanations might be lengthy and repeated (sometimes too often), I would be quite happy if ALL messages have added just a trailing explanation hyperlink into relevant documentation

That's a good point. Some SAS messages are very wordy. A good solution is the SQL standard of a message number (SQLCODE etc) and a brief text with the explanations listed in the documentation indexed by message number. Hyperlinks do not work in the SAS log, although a combination of standard syntax and an editor enhancement could interpret the message numbers as links, e.g.

ERROR: [1001] SAS has become confused and needs to rest.

iirc one of the installation files is the MSG file which provides a lookup from code to explanation and it appears in the sasv9.cfg file. Next time I'm in reach of a SAS systen I'll need to check.

in my v9.3 installation the *.msg are in

C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.3\core\sasmsg

YeahBut this SAS-L note says they are Not for Public Consumption
