Is there a way to specify data format while importing an Excel spreadsheet?

One of my customers imports a lot of spreadsheets and they have asked me an interesting question about the formats of imported data items…

Whenever they import a table which contains a currency and/or date field, the data is imported correctly but the formats from Excel are sometimes ignored; so as a result, dates that they expect to see as DDMMYYYY become MMDDYYYY ... and fields that were in £ or or $ format just become numeric fields without the Currency formatting applied.  This means that they will then have to go through each data item and fix the format in Explorer and/or Designer.

So the question is – is any way to specify the format of a column at the point when you are importing it or alternatively is there any way to manipulate the formats after import so that all users see the correct formats without needing to change the properties in Explorer/Designer?

Any help will be appreciated.
