In other SEM packages (MPLUS, EQS and SPSS AMOS), a variable can be delcared as categorical so that the algorithm can take into consideration the categorical nature of the values of those variables.
Say, for Gender (1 for MALE and 2 for FEMALE), 1 and 2 are not actual measures of anything and they are just randomly allocated numeric codes which are not ordered. For SES groups (1 for low, 2 for medium and 3 for high), 1, 2 and 3 are also randomly allocated codes, although there is an underlying ordering of those three values.
That said, does PROC CALIS provide similar features as MPUS, EQS or SPSS AMOS: Specifying a variable as (nominal/ordinal) categorical through a statement or an option within a statement?
