I am trying to keep the maximum observations for each ID by Var1 while keeping duplicates for the max. I have data such as:

ID Var1 Var2

1  90      8

1  90      9

1  85      8

2  70      6

2  70      5

2  65      9

3  50      5

3  65      5

and I want the following data:

ID Var1 Var2

1  90      8

1  90      9

2  70      6

2  70      5

3  65      5

I have tried a couple of different methods but have not had any sucess so far.

Here is one way:

proc sql noprint;
  create table want as
    select *
      from have
        group by ID
          having Var1 eq max(Var1)
  ;
quit;
