How can I remove different types of characters including blank spaces from the numeric values in a column.

 

I have 

a= " 12345 *duplicate ID/Name  "

I want

b=12345

 

Please see below what I tried.

 

data test;
a= " 12345 *duplicate ID/Name ";
b= input(strip(compress(a, 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz/*' )), 10.);
run;
