Team SIRS - Fight against sepsis, the leading course of death in critically ill patients

Sepsis causes about one in five deaths worldwide; in 2017 this amounted to 11 million lives lost. Most patients in intensive care units (ICUs) still die of sepsis. Mortality rises with every hour treatment is delayed because the diagnosis is missed. However, unnecessary treatment based on a wrong diagnosis  causes resistance to antibiotics.

In addition, ICU sepsis mortality varies a lot by region. Therefore, there is need and room for improvement! Fortunately, many ICUs already have electronic medical records available that are updated in near real-time. Together we can unleash the potential of these data and existing algorithms to contribute to prevent sepsis and save lives.
