@ccarel: I don't think there is any BEST formula for having one's posts accepted as solutions. I, personally, don't care if my posts get accepted as solutions .. I've been designated the solution provider many times when I shouldn't have been, overlooked many times when I was the first to offer what I thought was the optimal solution, and seen some instances where a poster designated a post as a solution and then changed their mind.

I think it comes down to why people post solutions to other's problems. Is it to help others? To learn by teaching? To force oneself to learn new approaches and techniques? To be recognized by their peers? Because this model is addictive?

Could be for any or all of those reasons, a combination, or some other motivation I haven't recognized.

Regardless I, personally, only try to address questions that are new on a particular day and haven't yet been offered what I'd consider as being an optimal solution.

p.s. You also have to train yourself to both think and type fast. I stopped posting to this forum a couple of years ago when I decided that I wasn't giving newbees enough of a chance to answer posts. I came back a couple of months ago, to look, and the same folks who were doing most of the posting then, were still posting the most now. What I'm trying to say is that to have the best chance to get your posts accepted as a solution, you often have to respond almost immediately after a question is posted.

p.p.s. Here is a live test. The following post has gone unanswered for the past 7 hours. I think I have a solution. Let's see if it gets accepted: https://communities.sas.com/t5/Base-SAS-Programming/How-to-create-Two-output-in-excel/m-p/345431

Hello I still have not got a first solution badge. I heard many people just accept their own anwser as a solution and in one of problems I posted this is actually true that even though a super user suggested a solution, I persisted and found my own better solution. I won't mark myself as a first solution though as that does not seem fair. My solution is even an eposter at SAS Global Forum this year, so this board helps us develop our thinking and learning.

Art is right too about one thing. I was going through unanswered problems and was designing a solution and Art annd someone else had answered much quicker than I could solve the problem. Their answers were shorter and better than mine too.

There has to be a balance for each of us as to how much we give and get out of any community. I can do some helpful unpaid programming, so that I learn more though. At the same time how much do I want to work to win Swag?

@ptimusk, in the instance you described, you are completely okay to accept your own solution as an "Accepted Solution." You persisted, researched and determined a better solution (for you) than what was presented. That solution may also help others. By marking it as an Accepted Solution, the post will rank higher in searches, allowing others to more easily find the helpful information.

Please feel free to mark your solution as the Accepted Slution. It sounds as if you've more than earned it.
