Hello,

I have been running into issues with SAS EG recently where a query might stop running because of lack of memory or local space. Today, when I was running a query on a very large SAS data set (it was a simple group by query), I received the following error:

NOTE: SAS threaded sort was used.

ERROR: Sort execution failure.

After researching this a bit on the SAS knowledge base, I was able to navigate to the SAS temporary files location and the physical location of the work library. However, I was not sure if I could clear space in this location by just deleting some of the temporary folders under SAS Temporary Files. Obviously, I don't want to just go around deleting blank folders.

Are there any elegant ways to clear memory in the local work space for SAS EG? I think the code is unable to run because it is hitting a limit on the amount of space available on my hard drive.

Thanks,

Srikar

I would be hesitant to delete individual files without knowing what they are.

Here are a couple of ideas clean up your disk drive:

1) SAS may have left some temporary files around from previous runs that crashed.  You can clear those out by exiting all parts of SAS and then going to the work area and deleting all the temp stuff that is left.

2) it may not be SAS that has gobbled up the space.  Use a utility like cleandisk to clear out all of Microsoft's temporary files.

3) when you start an EGuide project, SAS makes a copy.  You might save some space by cleaning up the project and using EGuide's Save As to get a clean and compacted copy.

4) By default, EGuide creates views, so it's temporary files are small.  Check your save options to make sure it is using views on WORK.

It is a common confusion of non-technical PC users to refer to disk space as "memory". It is not memory. It is disk space.
