I am tasked to manage company's SAS server (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 64 bit) As the title suggests, I need to see who is using SAS EG and EM at any current time and how much CPU they consume on their jobs while they are working. In short I need to monitor all SAS activities. I learned that SAS does not have a built in tool for that and I have to use a 3rd party software. I am seeking a mostly graphical tool if it exists. Pls direct me. Thanks.

SAS does have some tools, but they cost extra as part of grid management.

SAS EG and EM are clients that run on PCs.  I suspect that what you are looking to monitor are the SAS activities that they generate to run on the server.  *nix has a built in command called 'top' that will list your top CPU users.  You can look for graphical tools with this google search

linux graphical cpu monitoring

I would expect your unix support team already have some favorite tools that you can leverage for monitoring SAS usage.

SAS does have such a facility, called Audit, Performance and Measurement.

I believe it will let you do the kinds of things you're after. Here's a link:

Further to 's response, the APM tables provide a wealth of data you may find the information you need. and I are presenting a paper at SAS Global Forum in a couple of weeks on how to build a dashboard in Visual Analytics with the APM data and other sources. https://sasglobalforum.activeevents.com/connect/sessionDetail.ww?SESSION_ID=1247

Hopefully the paper will be available soon for you to download to get some ideas.

Kind Regards,

Michelle

Can APM be used without licensing SAS BI?

The APM package is designed to work with a SAS BI environment. I'm not sure what it would do if SAS BI is not licensed and used. There may be errors from the underlying code as the expected BI log files are missing. I'm not sure as I haven't used it in a non-BI environment.

There are more details about the package with FAQs at SAS 9.4 Audit, Performance and Measurement package where you can also see the 3 types of reporting provided.

You may be able to disable the BI scheduled scripts and only run the SAS Workspace related scripts. If you download the package there is a detailed document outlining the architecture, installation and configuration.
