I am new to SAS and have been provided access to EG5.1 e-learning course.

Do I need access to have SAS EG on my desktop and/or access to a SAS server to do the practice exercises ?? I can't see a link on the e-learning webpage to run SAS.

Doh!

Are you talking about

SAS e-Learning - Free Training

That is just the course content.  You still need access to EGuide and a SAS server.

The course is SAS EG1 Reporting & Querying which was provided to us as one of the analysts went on a very expensive analytics course run by a guru!

But I guess the same applies re needing an instance of EG1 & SAS Server?

Thanks for your help.

Hi:

SAS software does not come with ANY of the self-paced e-learning classes. The majority of our students use their company or school license for SAS. When you use Enterprise Guide with SAS, you can use in one of these scenarios:

1) local EG on Windows & local SAS on Windows

2) local EG on Windows & SAS install on a server (Windows server, Unix server, mainframe server)

3) local EG as a client on the BI Platform & SAS BI Platform install.

The SODP operates in #2 mode -- you install EG on your local Windows machine and your session of EG talks to SAS on the servers in North Carolina. Usually, in #2 and #3 mode, the servers with SAS are on the same network as the machine with EG - -but this is not always the case (as seen with the SODP). In our configuration for the SODP, SAS on the server is just at the SAS facility in NC.

Hi:

As Doc says, the e-learning courses do not come with access to SAS software. You must either use your employer's or school's copy of SAS for practice purposes. Or, otherwise, acquire a license for the SAS OnDemand for Professionals (SODP) product offering (http://support.sas.com/learn/ondemand/professionals/index.html).

When you use the SODP, you download a specially configured copy of SAS Enterprise Guide to your Windows machine. This copy of EG knows how to communicate with SAS on the servers in North Carolina. This means that you do need a high-speed Internet connection in order to have good response time. Also, under the terms of the license, you cannot upload your own data to the servers. You have to work with the data that is already loaded on the servers.

However, if you look at the "Learning Options" tab, you will see the list of courses and books whose data has been loaded already. So if you are taking one of our e-learning courses, you should find your data loaded on the server. You can look under the "Features" tab to see the software components that are available to you. The only "big" things that you can't practice with are SAS Enterprise Miner or the SAS BI Platform -- the SODP is really meant for the classes that are aimed at beginners -- Programming 1, Programming 2, SQL 1, Macro 1, Stat 1, etc.
