Tell how you've used SAS to have a positive impact on your community?
The tank farms at Hanford, Washington, contain a complex and diverse mix of radioactive and chemical waste generated over four decades of plutonium production. Approximately 56 million gallons of waste in the tank farms poses several significant threats to the environment.

What SAS products are you using and how are you using them?
(SAS Base 9) The Low Activity Waste Glass Application verifies chemical concentration quantities against constraints to control batch processing for vitrification of waste into glass that is poured into stainless steel containers. This process creates an avenue for the safe disposal of nuclear waste back into the ground for generations to come.

What was your most surprising discovery about your work?
Although not directly attributed to nuclear waste storage, rates of anencephaly and thyroid cancer are significantly higher in the communities surrounding the Hanford Tank Farms. The vitrification process converts the liquid waste into a solid glass form, and once poured into the containers, are less likely to leak and spread radioactive material into the community.
