SAS® Conference Provides Insights into “Big Data"

The upcoming SAS® Day @ UWM will allow people with all levels of expertise—in both academia and the private sector—to explore emerging uses of SAS® software in analyzing and visualizing data.

“This is literally for every student, faculty or staff member, or employed individual who wants to learn more about how Big Data are being used these days,” says Daniel Fuhrmann, Ph.D., CABHR statistician and event organizer. “What are some of the tools to manage, manipulate, and then explore and analyze the vast bodies of data that are popping up left and right?”

Keynote speaker Christian Nimsch, chief strategist and head of the Center for Health Analytics and Insights at the SAS® Institute, Inc., will focus on trends driving Big Data in healthcare, including the sources of healthcare data and how to integrate them, and cutting-edge applications in the visualization, exploration, and analysis of Big Data. Nimsch will also talk about the opportunities and challenges in Big Data, which he considers “The ‘New-Old’ Gold Rush.”

SAS® Day @ UWM is scheduled for 8 am to 4:30 pm, Friday, October 17 at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee’s Zelazo Center, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd.

Other speakers will include UW-Milwaukee alumnus LeRoy Bessler, Ph.D., of Bessler Consulting and Research, who will discuss the most effective techniques for visualizing and sharing data with other people. Dr. Fuhrmann will present on his work to visualize Timeline Follow-back data, a talk relevant to the wide range of fields that collect that type of data, including psychology, medical science, healthcare, social work, and criminal justice.

Analytics experts from We Energies will discuss their use of SAS® to segment customer data and analyze customer satisfaction surveys. And staff from the Center for Health Analytics and Predictive Modeling at the SAS® Institute, Inc., in Raleigh, N.C., will provide a live webinar on visual analytics, text analytics, and predictive modeling. There will also be an afternoon workshop for academic attendees on SAS® Visual Analytics, led by trainer André de Waal, Ph.D., of the SAS® Institute, Inc.

The schedule will include an overview of UW-Milwaukee’s Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Analysis Using SAS®. Additionally, attendees can explore opportunities for collaborative projects between UW-Milwaukee’s graduate certificate students and local businesses and organizations.

This is the second annual SAS® Day @UWM event; the first event, in 2013, attracted more than 120 attendees from both academia and business. CABHR sponsors SAS®Day @ UWM because training is an important piece of the Center’s mission, Dr. Fuhrmann explains. “CABHR has a longstanding history of summer seminars and workshops, and we see this as a continuation of those services,” he explains. “We see this as fulfilling our mission of training not only the next generation of scientists and researchers but also established scientists and community members who are learning new techniques to deal with data.”

The fee to attend is $40 for non-academics, and $20 for academics, and includes continental breakfast. To reserve your spot, please visit the event website:http://www4.uwm.edu/cabhr/sas/sas_days/registration.cfm
