When the Post-9/11 GI Bill was implemented in 2009, Congress failed to establish metrics to measure its success in helping veterans’ transition from military service to rewarding civilian careers. Veterans Education Success, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the promise and integrity of the GI Bill, has attempted to fill this information void by using the available ED and VA datasets to shed light on institutional sector enrollment trends and student veteran outcomes.

In this video, VES Research Director Walter Ochinko, provides an overview of the challenges in identifying veterans and analyzing student veteran outcomes using the publicly available data sets. He reveals strengths and weaknesses of those data sets and summarizes initiatives to increase the collection of data on GI Bill student outcomes. Finally, he reveals the methodology behind key findings from several VES reports that analyzed the publicly available data.
