Meet Erik Eknor Ackzell, a mathematician turned programmer who discovered his passion for teaching while helping others understand the world of data. Today, he’s a trainer at SAS in Sweden, celebrating four years of turning numbers into knowledge—and learners into confident SAS users.

“I’m a mathematician who was introduced to SAS about seven years ago.

I’ve loved the SAS language and its applications ever since.”

What started as a curiosity became a career. Erik found his dream job when he realized he could combine his three passions: teaching, programming, and people. That mix has made him a favorite among learners and a go-to expert at SAS.

Teaching that connects to Real Life

Erik doesn’t just go through slides—he reads the room. Each training is different, and not knowing the experience level of the learners is part of the job. Sometimes, that brings surprises.

- “Last week I was teaching Macro 2—and none of the participants had taken Macro 1, which is the prerequisite! But I adapted. I chose the parts most valuable for their work.”

This is Erik’s strength: understanding the learner’s world and customizing the training. While the course materials are designed for a general audience, Erik makes them personal and relevant. That’s what SAS learners remember. Not just code—but context.

Why In-Person Training still matters

In a digital-first world, Erik stands out for his love of in-person training.

“If I’m teaching that day, that makes me happy in the morning.”

Located in Stockholm, Erik is lucky: most of his learners are nearby, which means many of his courses take place at the beautiful SAS Sweden office. With its elegant setting and top-tier facilities, it offers more than just education—it offers an experience.

"We have a lovely setup, great classrooms, and a fantastic restaurant. It’s truly something special for participants.”

And sometimes, the magic goes beyond the training room.

“I even celebrated my son’s first birthday at the SAS office. It looked like a castle—it was a very fancy one-year-old party!”

The SAS Sweden office is more than a workplace—it’s a symbol of what makes SAS unique: people-first, beautiful environments, and unforgettable moments.

The Power of "Aha!" Moments

What drives Erik every day? It's not just the data—it’s the people.

“The most inspiring thing is seeing participants have ‘aha’ moments. When they connect what we teach with their own work—that’s the best part.”

Those moments can only happen when a trainer truly listens and adapts. Erik slows down when needed, adds extra depth for advanced learners, and makes space for everyone to grow.

Even when courses start with a wide mix of experience, Erik finds a way to make learning work.

“I can’t give them everything from Macro 1 in a Macro 2 course—but I can help them walk away with the most valuable pieces for their real job.”

That kind of flexibility is rare. But at SAS, it’s a mindset—and Erik embodies it.

Advice for New Trainers (and New Learners)

Erik started meeting customers just two months after joining SAS—something that surprised him.

“I thought I’d stay behind the scenes longer, but I got to co-train with colleagues early on. It was scary but effective. It helped me grow fast.”

His advice for new trainers? Don’t go it alone.

“Take advantage of your colleagues. SAS is full of brilliant, friendly people. Whether it’s tech skills or soft skills, someone is always happy to help.”

That team spirit—where experts share, support, and lift each other up—is part of what makes learning at SAS different. It’s also what Erik believes makes learners feel supported too.

“I help them see how the material fits their job. Even if the slides are general, I can personalize the experience.”

And that’s the real secret: It’s not just what you teach, it’s how you teach it.
