Installation Note 53263: When you start the SAS® University Edition via Virtual Box, an error might occur stating that this kernel requires an x86-64 CPU

 

When you attempt to open SAS University Edition, you might receive the error "This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU." This issue occurs on the Virtual Box and VMware versions of the SAS University Edition. See the instructions for your virtual player, below.

Here is what your settings should look like for your virtual machine. The boxed text indicates that your guest operating system is 32-bit.

Workaround

To remedy this situation, follow these steps:

 

  1. Close Virtual Box and, when prompted, select Power off the machine and click OK.

2.   Highlight your SAS University Edition virtual machine and select Settings icon, shown below.

3.  On the General tab, change the Version to Red Hat (64 bit). Click OK to apply these changes.

4.  Ensure that the Operating System now says Red Hat (64 bit).

5.  Now start your SAS University Edition virtual machine.

          At this point, you might see the following error message:

If you see this error message, review SAS Note 46250 for additional instructions.

 

For VMware Users

This is the first error that you see. It indicates that you are attempting to start SAS University Edition on a 32-bit guest operating system.

When you click OK, the next screen appears.

Workaround for VMware

To remedy this situation, follow these steps:

  1. Close VMware and, when prompted, click Power Off.

2.  Highlight your SAS University Edition virtual machine and click Edit Virtual Machine Settings.

3.  On the Options tab, under Guest operating system, ensure that Linux is selected.

     Then change the Version to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 64-bit. Click OK to apply these changes.

4.  Ensure that the OS field now says Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 64-bit, as shown below.

5.  Now start your SAS University Edition virtual machine.

          At this point, you might see the following error message:

This comment resolved my issue. The installGuide doc should have this workaround suggested.

I get that error message and my system is set to 64 bit.  Not sure what else to do
