SAS/Access and OLEDB

We are doing some performance and scalability test on our data warehouse at the moment.  Our primary data storage is SQL Server Standard Edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64_86.  When creating a set of Jobs in DI Studio and using Platform LSF to schedule the jobs.  We are running +- 4 jobs concurrently and we are getting intermittent errors from accessing OLEDB library.   We have a few of our libraries pre-assigned and they seem to be failing when multiple jobs are starting / stopping simultaneously with the following error:

ERROR: Error trying to establish connection: Unable to load OLE DB conversion library

From troubleshooting with SAS it seems to be a concurrency issue when multiple jobs initialise a library.  I was wondering if anyone else has come across the same issue or if they have a similar environment where there are no issues.

Cheers

Re: SAS/Access and OLEDB

Hi John,

A couple of clarifying questions, plus a tip.

Questions: To better help us to help you, what version of SAS, on what platform, 32 or 64-bit, etc? Are you running all on the one machine, is it a client-server set up, etc?

Tip: This is an Australia / New Zealand forum, which will definitely contain technical stuff (typically to complement local user group meetings), but there would be a MUCH larger pool of SAS experts beyond ANZ who could assist you with this issue.

Places to look:

  • SAS Notes: http://support.sas.com/kb/?ct=51000 - if you search "load OLE DB conversion library", there's a long list of reasons for this error.
  • There's a specific note that deals with a missing Windows registry key - http://support.sas.com/kb/18/890.html (although it's for v9.1)
  • Even within the SAS Communities site. Typing "access ole db" in the search field in the top-right also yields a list of user issues which may offer guidance to solve your problem, or allow you to post to a much larger and/or more functionally specific group.

If others in SASANZ have suggestions, excellent. I'm just trying to get the broadest forum to help with your issue.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Andrew

Thanks for the information.  Environment SAS 9.3, Windows 64bit.   4 Tier Implementation on VMWare (Meta, Compute, Middle Tier and Database).

Yes we have looked at most of the sites.  There is a lot of information regarded SAS and OLE DB but not alot around concurrency, scalability and how to size an environment for max concurrent libraries.

Was interested to see if anyone else in the current community locally was using DI Studio with OLE DB and SQL Server plus encountered any such problems.

If I learn of anything will post the results.

Cheers

Re: SAS/Access and OLEDB

Just an update on this.

After several long months of troubleshooting we finally found the root cause of the issue.  The error code which was being returned from SAS was due to long waits and timeouts received for the disk and SAN.

When SAS DI Studio requested a connection to the library, as the disks we overloaded they could not service the request and when a wait state was reported back to SAS it caused the error mentioned above

ERROR: Error trying to establish connection: Unable to load OLE DB conversion library

Cheers
