In my old Base programmer guide it says that only the "listing" ODS destination is open per default. In my newer prep guide (available online) it says that only the HTML ODS destination is open per default.

This is highly confusing. Is the HTML, the LISTING or both destinations open per default?

As of SAS 9.3 the default out of the box destination is HTML. Prior to that it was LISTING.

A user can override these defaults.

In newer versions HTML is the default. However, a user can customize the default settings per their preferences.

Well sure, but multiple destinations can be open at once so that doesn't really answer the question 😕

I will interpret this reply as "as of version 9,4 only one ODS destination is open per default, that destination is HTML".

Wether or not the SAS Base programmer test has been updated to reflect this change is up for interpretation I guess.

The key part of that is 'out of the box'.
