Dennis, I do not recognize that char " þ " it looks to be xFE. That is not ascii (7-bit origin) but latin1.
You are possible hit by encoding issues. It would be interesting what the encoding of SAS is the encoding/translation being set at the netezza client and what the encoding is at the netezza site. To have it more complicated not all lantin1 encodings are equal. That is why utf8 is getting that much attention for standardization.
Word Excel and internet (html) are using utf8. But SAS and many RDBMS systems are not using that (by default).
