Not able to upload textual data containing unicode characters.

I have a dataset (excel) containing text with unicode characters (example:  Smiley Happy ). When I create a sas dataset from this, I get only textual part whereas these unicode characters are ignored. Is there a workaround in SAS (not using any 3rd party software) ?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions in advance!

Re: Not able to upload textual data containing unicode characters.

For a start could you run proc options and then look for the DBCS settings.

proc options;run;

They should be similar to this.

 DBCS Enables double-byte character sets for encoding East Asian languages.
 DBCSLANG=UNKNOWN  Specifies a double-byte character set language.
 DBCSTYPE=UTF8 Specifies the encoding method to use for a double-byte character set.
