The exact version of SAS is likely to be important information as well. I don't work in a Linux environment but I've had to reinstall different versions of the JRE when our IT folks "upgraded" and removed the previous version.

If you are planning to install SAS 9.4 then your question is irrelevant because SAS supplies a private JRE version as part of the install.

It depends on which version of SAS (and which web application server) you're running, and also the CPU chipset you have on your servers.
i586 = Intel 586 based machines (32-bit)
IA64 = Intel Itanium based machines (64-bit)
x86 = x86 chipsets
