Create a calculated variable with null value

I am trying to create a external table comprised from a series of tables using the append function.  A number of the fields of the "master" dataset do not exist in some of the other tables so I've created calculated variables (SAS eG 5.1) to act as field placemarkers and I want the value of those variables to be null.  This is probably a Put() function statement, but since there's hardly any help on most of the functions in SAS I don't know what to throw in there.  Thanks in advance.

Re: Create a calculated variable with null value

Doesn't the FORCE option in proc append allow you to append datasets with new variables in them?
