^missing(varname)?

Can someone please tell me what ^missing(varname) means? I assume that ^ means IF, so that IF the varname doesn't exist, something happens.Or perhaps it means NOT?

Incidentally, it's used in the Where-statements in Extract transformations in DI Studio.

Thanks.
