If you know that your data is sorted, but not in a pre-defined sorting sequence (such as ASCII, ANSI etc).

I.e. month names.

The benefit is that you still will be able to use BY group processing in the data step/PROCs.

Data never sleeps

Hi,

SAS(R) 9.2 Language Reference: Dictionary, Fourth Edition

Notsorted is for when data is grouped logically, but not necessarily in alphabetic or numeric order.  I.e.

B

B

B

A

A

C

C

The data A is grouped together but is not sequential to B.
