The best recommendation I can give you is to go search on this topic yourself. For example it took me less than a minute to go to

www.support.sas.com and type in the search words: best practice data architecture and click the search button. Back popped a long list of references from which you can choose the ones of most interest. 

As @Kurt_Bremser has pointed out this is way too broad a question to give you any answers that may be of interest. Please do the research. Then we would be most happy to answer any specific questions on what you have read.
