Dear,

 I need to create a variable(date1) based on date variable  missing information. In the second OBS date is missing and third OBS Month and date missing.

1     2012-05-01
2     2012-05
3     2012


output needed.

Assuming your date should always be in the form YYYY-MM-DD the use LENGTHN to determine which fields are missing. 

In record 3, both month and day are missing.

You could count the words, as separated by "-"

input id    date :$10.;
datalines;
1     2012-05-01
2     2012-05
3     2012

data want;
set have;
date1 = choosec(countw(date, "-"),"M", "D", " ");
