In the following example, how to assign to a new character variable (newcharvar) the value of a macro variable (charvalue)?  I can do that when the variable is numerical as showed below, but for character variables I get error.

data one;

input var;

datalines;

2

;

run;

%let value=20;

%let charvalue=aa;

data one;

set one;

format newcharvar goodexample $char10.;

goodexample='xx';

newvar=&value;

newcharvar=''&charvalue'';

run;

While at first glance your example looks like you are surrounding the macro variable with double quotes, you are actually surrounding it with two sets of single quotes.  Replace both sets with double quotes.  i.e.:

newcharvar="&charvalue";
