Hi Co's,

 

I wanted to know why smtp configuration is required in sas, I mean I know it is required to send a email , user can use, monitor jobs etc. 

 

I have few questions with smtp setup in sas.

1. Is it default with sas ? I mean during installation and configuration , mostly we do setup smtp.

2. What will happen if we dont want smtp setup - will it only impact users and they will not be able to send email by sas program ? or anything it is really required to have it ? I am sure we(as sas admin) will get not any trigger for our environment down, or any short of notification as per environment availability.

 

Why I am checking, only concern for us, with smtp we can send email outside organisation as well, which our security team is not liking it(part of auditing). Do we have any options to restrict the email? it should go within organization, not outside ...

Your suggestion, please.

It is the responsibility of the SMTP server admins to prevent unwanted sending of emails, e.g. from a particular computer to outside domains. Your "security people" should know this.

Hi @kumarsandip975 ,

 

while it is listed as a requirement (I would say reasons are obvious, but I will describe after), SMTP is not required as such.

You can leave blank or put dummy values. You will be able to complete your installation. I think this answers the main question

 

About your secondary question, why is it needed: When you deploy SAS metadata, it is to send any kind of alert from the system. When you deploy the middle-tier, for the same reason, because Apache "needs" it.

 

But, perhaps, the main and actual reason do put proper data from the beginning, is because you want your SAS installation to set all up, at least to a basic level. If you don't, you can still add or change later, however the manual process might not update all where it is needed or not properly always.

Thanks for @JuanS_OCS the suggestions, as I mentioned, I also want to know if any such option to restrict the user/developer not to send email outside organisation domain email, such as @gmail.com etc. I guess FROM can be managed , but what about restricting TO list.

Hi @kumarsandip975 ,

 

there is no restriction as such in SAS. However you can customize as much as you want from the mail server point of view with rely lists and rules.

@JuanS_OCS  , All - If I can get some help with documentation to set the required rules on SMTP server, will be really helpful.

I am not an SMTP server and probably it will depend on what kind of server you have and such.

You can try wait to see if anyone can help you, but I personally would not keep my hopes up Witt that choice.

If I would be you, I would reach out to your SMTP admins or your vendor tech support. Or chatGPT!
