Your SAS Global Forum paper: Now with GitHub!

If you're presenting at SAS Global Forum 2019, you want your wisdom to "live on" and travel beyond the halls of the conference, right? You probably already know that your published paper will be part of the proceedings, but what about your code? Or reports? Or slides?

This year, SAS and the conference team have worked together to create a special place on GitHub where you can share any and all of your supporting materials. Check it out here:

This step is completely optional for presenters. But, if you take the time to add your content, you'll be helping to preserve and share the great contributions that make up the SAS Global Forum takeaways.

We've seeded the repository with folders and README files for most of the accepted papers. Simply fork the repository, find your folder, add your content, and use a pull request to merge your additions with the repo.

If you're new to GitHub and its unusual lingo/protocols, we're happy to help. Community member @cj_blake, as well as me or @joeFurbee on my team, can lead you through the process or even add materials for you. Just PM any of us on the community, or reply here.

I'm not a presenter, but I assume that this is set up so that we attendees can access the supporting materials for presentations. Is that correct? If so, is there anything specific we GitHub newbies need to know to be able to access the materials? Do we need to set up an account on GitHub in order to view materials?

Thanks @CJac73! I checked out the content that @SASJedi had uploaded. I did notice that I can access his content via the list of items at the top of the page, but when I click on the links that are in his readme file, I get a redirect with 404 error. It looks like they're pointing to the same path, so that's odd.

Any chance you're going to present a "How to use GitHub" session at SAS Global Forum??? "Fork your repository" sounded... interesting... so I had to google it to see what it meant.

@TBarker,

I believe his links in the README are specified incorrectly. For example, the link https://github.com/sascommunities/sas-global-forum-2019/blob/master/cre8data.sas should really be https://github.com/sascommunities/sas-global-forum-2019/blob/master/3220-2019-Jordan/cre8data.sas (note the 3220-2019-Jordan in the second path, which is needed to point to his subdirectory). You are sent to this location if you click on one of the files listed above the README.

No problem! I happened to be looking at this a little bit ago while working to push the supplementary materials for my paper to the git repo (located here, if you're interested).

Also, a tip that I forgot to mention. When you view a file on Github, for some file types, there is a convenient "Download" button, which I think might only appear for files that Github is unable to render. For other file types, instead there is a "Raw" button that enables you to view the raw version of the file. You can either click on that to view the raw version of the file, or if you right click and select "Save link as" you can download the file:

This was not obvious to me when I first started using git and Github, so I thought I would mention it.

Hi @TBarker - we are working on scheduling something like that, yes. And you are always welcome to visit us in the SAS Support Communities station in the Quad -- @joeFurbee or I can talk your ear off about GitHub and teach you to fork, clone, pull request, blame, etc.

Thanks I have all the permissions and forms signed by our director. The example code is uploaded for my paper 3981

Disclosure Control: Project Management Issues and Solutions

My coworker wrote the code but he is credited and our mutual director at work has signed for the contributor agreement.

To fully run the code you will need to buy a license to our in house Confidentiality SAS code/macro.
