Do we need EG for SAS VA?

Hello all,

Do we need to buy SAS Enterprise Guide extra to VA?

Or for simple direct reporting from DB2 we can live without it?

What's your opinion (best practice)?

It's all in you requirements.

EG and VA are two seperate tolls, with partially different audiences, all though the exploration capabilities may replace some functionality in EG.

But EG is way more flexible, and allows power user do detailed data manilupaltion, reporting and statsistical analysis. Also, eG let user build up tasks step by step in process flows.

To add more headache to your concern, SAS Studio is a newcomer that <may> replace EG one day. It has similar capabilities (subset) as EG, and is 100% web based.

Hi Jan,

I assume you are considering SAS Enterprise Guide to do your data preparation and load into SAS Visual Analytics. You wouldn't necessarily need to use SAS Enterprise Guide for reporting seeing that you have SAS Visual Analytics.

You may be interested in reading @TriciaA's blog post on using SAS Enterprise Guide to load data into the LASR server for SAS Visual Analytics - http://bi-notes.com/2015/10/oh-snap-upload-data-to-the-lasr-server-just-like-that/

As @LinusH points out another method is to use SAS Studio or SAS DI Studio to load your data. It depends on what method you want to use to get your DB2 data into the LASR server. May I add that EG might be used for data preparation, but IMO only for ad-hoc or personal use.

If you have division/enterprise wide data, you need a tool that is better target for maintenance.

For simpler flows, the Data builder within VA can be used.

If you have have homogeneous data, that need more cleansing etc, SAS DI Studio is the preferable tool.
