Initial value, issue after update to VIYA 4

Since upgrading to VIYA4 (Version: Long-Term Support 2024.09 Release: 20241128.1732783586600) we have had issues with control objects like sliders.

Most of our reports are updated daily, and until now it has been possible to set the min/max of sliders to dynamic min/max to always get all of the dates in the dataset.

But as stated in the release notes:
Control objects have a new Initial value option, and range slider objects have Initial min value and Initial max value options. These options enable you to specify the default initial selection for the control when a user opens the report for the first time, or when they select Restore default report state.

This means that all our users have to manually change the sliders every day they open the report, we have tried all the different options, including parameters, but nothing helps - the 2nd time a user opens the report, they have to change the slider themselves. And that is a big pain for almost all of them.

I need an idea to get around this.

The Minimum and Maximum options are still available for the slider, so it is not clear what problem you are encountering. When you upgraded, did these options change to Automatic instead of Min/Max? If you edit the report to change them back to Minimum Value and Maximum value, and then save the report, it should not be necessary to change anything each time the report is viewed.

I have just learned that there is a known issue that is likely be the reason why the slider is not working the way you expect. Do you have Automatic Actions turned on for the page. When this option is used, you can encounter the problems that you describe.

This should be fixed in the next stable release.

Automatic actions are not enabled.

The slider is in the report control area

The documentation states that whatever you choose in "initial value" it will only be like that the first time the user opens the report. or if they "restore default report state"

it seems like quite an oversight with VIYA 4?

Can I ask which release you were using before you upgraded to Viya 4? And is the slider being filtered by another control

I dont know, only that it was 3.5

But what we had as an option there was dynamic date filter, that would always go to the max / min of the data, regardless of how many times the report was opened.

The behavior did change between Viya 3.5 and your release. You might be able to avoid this problem by disabling the saved viewer state feature.

Thanks for the links, the issue here is that some of our users use the ability to customize the variables they look at (replace variable feature) and that would just revert back every time.

Do you know if SAS plans to bring back the dynamic min/max ? I dont understand why it wouldn't still be an option.

My understanding is that the behavior in Viya 3.5 was not the intended behavior and that it introduced several problems. For that reason, I do not believe the current behavior will change. However, I would suggest opening a product suggestion so that other users can vote on it. Suggestions are monitored.
