Using shape files in VA 8

Hi , I have several custom ESRI shape files. I get these imported, but I cannot figure out how I can use these in VA 8. Can somebody please tell me how or point me to the right part of the documentation.

Thanks, I followed this recepie. I get the data loaded, but get a message that none of this data is placed. If I take the same data and plot in a coordinate plot I get a result. So I'm still lost

Thanks, for some reason or another I suddenly got the imported shapefiles to work
