Introducing SAS Enterprise Guide 8.1!

It's here! Announcing the release of SAS Enterprise Guide 8.1 (available beginning 18JUN2019). The redefined EG 8.1 sports:

A modern interface
Tab-based organization of content
Flexible window management, such as floating, docking, and leveraging multiple monitors

This seems to eliminate my biggest reason for not using EG. I would love to try it, as soon as my organization upgrades to 8.1 (which might not be for a few months/years/decades, you never know).

PLEASE MAKE THE STANDALONE INSTALLER AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUAL DOWNLOAD! (not part of full-blown SAS depots only)

I'm begging on my knees here (picture available if needed for documentation).

@Kurt_Bremser - I vote to see the picture! And having endured an over 10 hour full SAS depot download to get EG 8.1 I second that.

Can the font size be changed and made smaller? In my Base SAS 9.4, if I open SASHELP.CLASS via viewtable, I see the 19 observations take up less than 1/2 of my screen vertically; but in the video showing EG 8.1, the 19 observations take up about 3/4 of the screen.

@PaigeMiller - since EG 7.12, you've been able to zoom your view (larger and smaller) by using the standard Ctrl+/Ctrl- key combo, or set a specific percentage for the scale. So...you can easily fit more data in less space.

Nice! Up until a few days ago, we were using EG 7.1, now we're up to 7.15, which should have this font size capability, I will give it a try.

There is a standalone installer, but it is buried in a SAS Software Depot. There is no alternative to requesting an updated SAS Software Depot for your site. The auto update feature in EG will work for future updates beyond 8.1.

Thank you SAS for doing it more complicated for the end users. If it's buried in SAS Software Depot, then it's not a standalone installer. It's a bit of a disappointment.

Can someone "dig it out" of the SAS Software Depot? 🙂

I am completely with you. I am VERY disappointed by the "politics" with regards to the availability of the Enterprise Guide standalone installer.

Personally, as a customer (and "valued" member here) I feel ****** ** *** ***.

Hi, I'm new here, but doesn't SAS EG 8.1 have new features that require an upgraded version of the back-end for them to work?

@eSAS - EG 8.1 will work with all reasonably recent versions of SAS. For example we are using it with SAS 9.4M2.

@Grinvydas - this isn't a new delivery method. EG has always been delivered via a SAS Software Depot since depots were first introduced. The standalone installers just come in a separate folder in the depot.

I don't want to sound offensive towards to you SASKiwi, sorry if I did. You state the fact how SAS is rolling out their updates.

My main point is that I do not agree with how SAS does it, as it's more complicated for the end users.

I don't understand where is the barrier to make EG standalone install available for public? I believe it's not a technical limitation, but more company politics.

Requesting updated SAS Software Depot in a corporation is quite tedious task.

@Grinvydas - I didn't read it that way so no need to apologise. I'm in total agreement with you that you shouldn't have to download a complete SAS depot to update EG. Although, once you are on EG 8.1 you can use the automatic update menu option for later updates.

Here is the location of the EG standalone installer within your SAS depot:

<SASDEPOTROOT>\standalone_installs\SAS_Enterprise_Guide_Independent_Installer\8_1 (SASEnterpriseGuide81_x86_x64.exe)

As noted, subsequent EG 8.x releases (ex. 8.2, 8.3, etc) will be able to be upgraded to via EG's Check for Updates feature.

Thanks for the feedback. We agree and hope to make it easier to get EG in the future. (Without having to download a massive depot.)

I probably repeat myself already, but the problem is that end users like me don't know how to get this new depot. Very likely it needs to be requested by someone who is responsible for SAS software in the company. So having EG install file inside an imaginary depot does not help much for now 🙂

You are correct. Most end users do not manage or interact with the SAS depot. Your SAS administrator would have to make the installer and/or depot available to you (their end users).
