Environment: SAS EG 4.1. No BASE SAS on client machine.
Problem: In metadata an ORACLE-based library defined, composed mainly of views.
A few views are very complicated and spans large tables, so even in ORACLE a SELECT * FROM view takes a long time to start.
When I drag such view into Project Designer (with the option of "Automatically open data when added to project" set to OFF), it is fine.
If I right-click the data source and ask for Properties, it waits indefinitely.
But, if I right-click the data source and add a Filter and Query, the answer is very fast.
The question is: what additional info are calculated in Properties, but the columns structure? And no, I do not checked "Always obtain the total record count for DBMS tables" 🙂
Thank you all
Stefan,

EG obtains properties a couple of different ways, and the way you mention does open the data (thus executing the view).

You can try right-clicking on the data source in the Server list (not the project tree/designer) and selecting Properties. See if that is quicker.

In 4.2 we've improved this; there is an OBS= limit put onto the open operations (behind the scenes) so these operations perform quicker.
