It is a best practice to always to a full backup before applying any patch/hot fix or maintenance release of software or operating system.

Full backup of SAS installation and configuration directories should be sufficient. SAS data files elsewhere isn't affected by a maintenance upgrade.

Since any system in production use MUST have an incremental backup for recovering the system in case of total loss, this seems to be a non-issue for me. If you do not have that in place already, then total data loss is obviously tolerated.

What is being suggested here is NOT just a backup of SAS files and folders but a FULL backup which by definition means all SAS Servers' drives are completely backed up - absolutely everything on them.

When this is done, it means that if anything serious happens during the upgrade, you can do a FULL restore, which will put your SAS servers back in the same state they were before you started your upgrade.

Typically these types of tasks are done by IT server administrators and all you have to do is request a full disk backup from them, you don't need to know the mechanics of how they do this. I'm hoping this makes things clearer for you.
