While installing SAS we give a fully qualified domain name such as myhostname.example.com.

Can we not shorten it to simply myhostname. (remove the domain part : example.com)?

It is a recommended best practice to enter a fully qualified hostname, as prompted by the SAS Deployment Wizard panes. This can be useful especially if you are doing a multi-tier planned deployment where users need to access SAS/third-party servers/resources across your network (for example: when accessing SAS web applications on a browser through your middle tier that hosts your SAS Web Server and SAS Web Application Server). SAS deployments also store fully qualified, resolvable hostname information internally in metadata and in physical configuration files.
