SAS support from my country does not help with "optimization" themes. According to them, if it is not broken, there is no problem.

My productive environment is SAS 9.4M6 for Linux, it was installed on multi-server: Compute Server, Mid-Tier and Metadata.

The Web Infrastructure Platform Data Server (PostgreSQL) is installed on Compute Server. I wonder if it is possible to "move" it to "Mid-Tier", and know the advantages and disadvantages of this change.

I suggest you check out the performance of this software on your system in SAS Environment Manager. On our SAS Compute Server it is averaging around 2% CPU usage. If it is similar on your system then I can see no advantage in moving it to the mid-tier server for such a small reduction in CPU.

Hi @dcmacedo,

You haven't posted the reason why you want do this? Are you facing any issues?

If I remember correctly, in the initial release of 9.4M0 it was on Mid-Tier and was later changed to compute.

However it is recommended to host this server on compute node as it has to started before any other services.

The goal is to decrease the number of active threads in Compute Server. Because I am having problems with "Load Avarege" on this server.

Oh, I see. I would suggest you to check if any tuning would help here? There are some recommendations provided by SAS in this link - http://support.sas.com/documentation/cdl/en/appsrvtuning/69859/HTML/default/viewer.htm#p0pj0sciz5c3b2n1o5qp95b6uo5x.htm

Also, if the case is that the server is over utilized than what was initially planned, its better to opt for a resizing excerise to match the server(physical/vm) specs for the current demand/utilization. Hope this helps!

Would be worth involving Tech Support on this problem as well if you haven't already done so. It is a lot easier to tune rather than reconfigure SAS servers.

@dcmacedo - IMO that is a very strange attitude. Are you seeing poor performance on your App server not due to resource constraints? If so that should be sufficient reason to investigate causes. Personally I've had very positive experiences with SAS Tech Support regarding performance issues.

If you feel that Tech Support is not addressing your problem sufficiently then I suggest you escalate this to your SAS Account Manager.
