What does the documentation say?

The best way to fully understand syntax is to try them, adjust and see the difference in behaviour.

relating to line:

input style $ @;

means: read first variable in row and stay in same row until you get:

input <optional more variables> ;

the semi-colon ( ; ) tels SAS to skip to next row on next READ statement;
